“ADULTING”

After graduating college, I remember heading out into the adult world thinking, surely they made a mistake. I need more training. I have no idea how to do this. Every aspect of my world felt chaotic and out of order. I felt out of place and underprepared.

Navigating the transition from college to “adulting” is challenging. Instead of feeling confident and prepared, many people feel overwhelmed and out of their element. Everything seems to change: friends, responsibilities, living arrangements, daily activities, work… I could go on. It’s not uncommon to feel lost and out of place.

During this (and other transitional times) remember to stay connected and get connected. Maintain friendships that you can rely on, even if they are long distance. Don’t stop there, though. Reach out and make some new local friends. Build a support system where you are. Looking for a starting place? Try out hobby-related meetups, religious groups, or recreational sports teams.

It’s also helpful to talk about you experience “adulting.” It’s a release, it feels good to get things off our chest. Feel the freedom to laugh, cry, or be angry. In the process of sharing we often learn that we are not alone. Others may offer some insight and tips as to what helped them transition to “adulting.”

Bottom line? Lean on people for support and motivation during this time of transition.
