One Word for Your New Year

It’s officially a New Year! And if you are like most people, January brings high aspirations for a new-and-improved you.

To be honest, I’ve never been great at New Year’s Resolutions. In fact, I don’t know anyone who actually is! Even the most determined individuals end up compromising on their lofty ambitions sometime around February or March. Little by little, we backslide until our list dwindles and we are not even sure what our goals for the year were. Defeated and discouraged, we trudge along until this time next year when (unsuccessfully) we try yet again.

So if resolutions don’t really work, is there still something we can do to reflect and pursue personal growth? When I was in college, I discovered a solution for my New Year’s Resolution rut. I adopted the idea from a favored pastor of mine, and nine years later, it is still working for me!

One word. That’s it. I can do one word. And if I can do it, anyone can! The goal is to lose the long list and pick just one word that helps focus your vision and growth for the whole year. You would be surprised how many layers and complexities exist in one simple word and how much growth you can achieve when you spend an entire year focused on one thing.

Some examples from my past years are Patient, Fearless, and Value. This year, I’ve decided to choose Grateful, and I am eager to see how a year of pursuing gratitude in life will impact me and hopefully others in the process.
