Rethinking New Year Goals

Maybe you’re like me, in that you love dreaming big, planning ahead, and setting goals to move you toward your dream. I’ve been known to get so wrapped up in the goal setting process that I end up with 18 goals that each have 3 objectives. Talk about unrealistic!

I have found that generalizing my goals into intentions helps. This might mean that if you have a number of relationship oriented goals, you might think about a relevant intention that generalizes across various relationships: listening more, asking for help, showing appreciation. By generalizing intentions, we are often more successful.

I’ve also discovered that setting annual goals, or intentions, doesn’t work for me. Instead, I tend to review my intentions quarterly, which helps me adjust my focus as needed. I even have a reminder on my calendar to review. I find that this keeps my intentions fresh and relevant throughout the year.

What changes do you need to help make your goals or intentions successful?
